Summary

The steering bow is an innovative steering control which represents an alternative to the well-known conventional steering wheel. Due to the enhanced knee- and legroom compared to conventional steering wheels, the steering bow is especially suitable for new vehicle concepts such as bio-hybrids, meaning multi-track pedal-assisted light electric vehicles. The steering bow concept is the result of an iterative ideation phase including two user studies. The final concept is developed in combination with a steerby wire system, equipped with a force feedforward and force feedback control system, so the driver receives feedback on the dynamic state of the vehicle via the perceived position change of the steering bow. Currently, the steering bow is integrated into a seating buck and will be subjected to further tests.
