Summary
This paper describes a new 1.6L gasoline direct injection (GDI) and turbocharged engine (MR16DDT) that achieves lower fuel consumption and a good balance of high dynamic performance to ensure the competitiveness of future B/C/D-segment models and compliance with Euro 6 emission regulations. Low fuel consumption was attained mainly through the adoption of technologies that maximize thermal efficiency with a high compression ratio, improve anti-knock performance and minimize mechanical friction loss. The details of the second-generation MR16DDT are described focusing on the principal technologies applied.
