Summary

Diesel drives are an important element of Volkswagen AG’s powertrain portfolio – in fulfilling customer needs and in achieving the company’s CO2 targets. The ongoing further development of diesel powertrains as a driver of cleaner mobility, while retaining their valued positive characteristics is therefore a major objective in the development work done by the Volkswagen Group. This paper describes the objectives set for the new generation of four-cylinder diesel engines from Volkswagen and their major technical features. The new engine was developed to achieve a further significant increase in efficiency, to fulfil all current and future emissions requirements for the EU28 region and user countries, to improve power delivery and comfort and to achieve significant weight reduction. The new four-cylinder diesel engine from Volkswagen will be used first in the vehicles built by the Audi brand with longitudinally mounted engines and with mild hybridisation. The engine will subsequently be used in Group vehicles with transversely mounted engines, fully replacing the preceding generation by 2021.
