Summary
The Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2ICE) is an attractive option to eliminate CO2 emissions in global automotive markets and is seeing rapidly growing interest. For some applications, BEV’s and Fuel Cell’s do not easily meet the required operating and environmental constraints, and so are not an easy option for decarbonization. These intensive applications might have extreme temperature ranges, dirty operating environments, the need for continuous high-power operation, or a requirement for multiple shifts with very high uptime. In such situations, the refueling convenience of H2, combined with the robustness of the ICE following more than a century of development offers a distinct advantage when choosing between the zero CO2 options. Attractive economics further improves the case for H2ICE in such applications.
This paper presents PHINIA’s experience with H2ICE on multiple different engines operated at high intensity proving its flexibility, robustness and reliability. These positive characteristics were demonstrated on PHINIA’s LCV by operating continuously for 12 hrs. Large distances were covered, short refueling times enabled a high utilization rate and the relatively low specific weight of the powertrain allowed for the transportation of heavy loads at high vehicle speeds. Another example with a high utilization requirement is the Genset application. Not only must this application be able to run continuously for 24 hrs, with good high load efficiency when required, but it must also be ready for a rapid start from cold in case it is used as a back-up power supply. A third example is for racing applications where the H2ICE can be very attractive, as it shows an exceptional power to weight ratio, which makes it very interesting for endurance racing such as the 24 hrs of Le Mans. All presented examples are showing the superior characteristics of H2ICE for these high intensity applications.
