Summary

BMW Group’s plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) are fully-fledged electrified and highly flexible vehicles. Even today, they represent a viable alternative for covering most of the daily driving without CO2 emissions.
This is possible thanks to BMW Group’s unrivaled know-how in the areas of internal combustion engines and electric drive technology. The highlights in terms of PHEV further developments brought to the market this year by BMW are the BMW X5 xDrive 45e and the BMW 745e. Both combine a 6-cylinder in-line petrol with the latest BMW eDrive technology, a more advanced battery technology including increased capacity and extended range. Both models use the components taken from BMW’s modular electric drive system of the so-called 4th generation.
At the same time, the development of the 5th generation of electric modular system is in progress, which will start in 2020 with launch of the first fully electric vehicle by the BMW core brand, the BMW iX3. This will also initiate the third phase of electrification: the phase of scaling and increased flexibility both in architecture and in production.
The BMW Group considers PHEV to be enablers of the mass market for pure electric vehicles (BEV) – from a technical point of view and with regard to production, yet also on an emotional level.
