Summary
The electrification of passenger cars is in full swing, ~20% of newly registered vehicles in Europe are equipped with an electric motor and now the industry is preparing for the next milestone: The electrification of heavy-duty commercial vehicles, notably for long-haul transport. The presentation of numerous battery-electric models at the IAA Transportation 2022 heralded a new era in long-haul heavy-duty transportation. Likewise, the future charging standard MCS (Megawatt Charging System) was recently demonstrated for the first time, which is expected to enable charging capacities of up to 3.75MW. P3, as project leader of the HoLa funding project which is piloting megawatt charging for e-trucks along German highways, provides an outlook on the expected electrification rates in the long-haul segment and extrapolates the need for MCS charging infrastructure - including an economic analysis, derivation of the future electricity demand in the segment and assessment of the impact of MCS on high and medium voltage grids in Europe.
