Summary

Audi's successful 3.6 L V8 twin turbo Le Mans engine of 2000 has been developed to fuel straight injection (FSI®). Most of the modifications have been done in the area of the cylinder head. Parallel to an ambitious intake port development in order to generate the necessary air motion, injectors with special spray arrangements have been created. In order to define the parameters for the mixture of fuel and air test bench work has been done as well as extensive simulation work with CFD. All these efforts in combination with the increased compression ratio showed an increase of torque up to 9 % and a reduction of the consumption of 8 – 10 %. Another benefit was the big improvement of the driveability of that engine with a performance of more than 600 HP. All endurance tests and part of the development work has been done on a high dynamic AVL test bench. The 3,6 l V8 FSI® twin turbo engine helped to achieve a double victory in 2001 and even the historical triple victory in 2002 at Le Mans. The engine showed an outstanding winning performance and reliability on many other racetracks. Audi has set a new standard in engine development for sportscar races with the V8 FSI® twin turbo.
