Summary

The development of combustion engines in the past decades has mainly been shaped by emission restrictions imposed by environmental legislation. Development focused on optimized combustion processes, alternative fuels and exhaust gas treatment to handle these restrictions and make it possible to meet the specified targets. Increasingly taking carbon dioxide into consideration means that the focus of development turns to fuel efficiency and therefore friction loss. Part of this friction loss is caused by the crankshaft bearing. Optimizing this part of the friction loss means going beyond the bearing itself and taking into account engine-specific conditions such as engine operation with its different operating cycles and also bearing-specific conditions such as hydrodynamics, mixed friction and oil conditions.
