Summary

Mercedes-Benz already communicated a clear strategy for the full electrification of its powertrains in 2019. On the road to e-mobility, conventional drives are electrified with mild hybrid technology (48 V). The two successful M 256 (gasoline) and OM 656 (diesel) sixcylinder inline engines from the FAME (Family of Modular Engines) engine family will receive a comprehensive update in their next development stage. Since its market launch in 2016, the M 256 electrified with mild hybrid technology (48 V) has been undergoing an overhaul of the engine block, with the aim of increasing the output in stoichiometric operation. The mild hybrid technology is also updated and an electric machine and a powerpack of the latest generation are integrated. The OM 656 will be equipped with the mild hybrid technology (48 V) for the first time with the facelift. In addition, the exhaust gas aftertreatment system has been extensively developed. Among other changes, the sequence of catalysts was adapted to improve the conversion of nitrogen oxides. Since both drivetrains receive the same mild hybrid system, they both benefit from the same comprehensive and intelligent 48 V operating strategy, which optimally supports customers' demands on comfort, agility and luxury of Mercedes-Benz products.
