Summary
The global mobility industry is striving towards emission neutral powertrains to reduce global CO2 emissions. Legislators worldwide have enacted regulations enforcing a significant reduction of greenhouse gases including CO2. For the transport sector including buses, medium- and heavy-duty trucks, MAHLE sees the need for a technology open approach as most efficient option for a fast decarbonization. Beside optimized diesel powertrains which can also run with renewable fuels, new powertrain types such as battery electric, fuel cell electric or hydrogen combustion engine vehicles will be required to comply with truck CO2 regulations and to reduce the carbon footprint of the transport sector. While battery electric trucks offer advantages on short routes, hydrogen powered vehicles could be an attractive solution for longer distances and offer advantages in the daily usage by carriers. The refuelling times of hydrogen is shorter compared to charging times of battery electric trucks. In addition, longer ranges also allow routes in areas with less dense infrastructure.
This paper will describe the opportunities and challenges on the way to a hydrogen mobility. MAHLE offers a holistic approach for hydrogen powered applications with innovations and advanced testing facilities for fuel cell electric and H2 combustion engine powertrains. Each of these powertrain options has special requirements to its cooling system in terms of heat rejection, target temperatures of the components involved and required coolant properties. Optimized solutions for each powertrain are needed to master the specific challenges. Based on the MAHLE corporate strategy MAHLE 2030+, the group offers innovative solutions for electrification, thermal management and combustion engines powered with sustainable fuels.
