Summary
Volkswagen is adopting a leading role amongst automotive manufacturers on its way to carbon-neutral mobility with its “Way to Zero” decarbonisation program. Due to the brand strategy ACCELERATE a further acceleration of the E-Offensive ramp-up will take place and in just a few years, battery electric vehicles (BEV) will make up the majority of the company’s sales. At the same time, the company is advancing the targeted enhancement of powertrains including internal combustion engines. This entails surpassing future statutory emission limits and customer expectations in the respective markets. It also takes into consideration the global markets that will not have a high-tech charging infrastructure for BEVs in place in the foreseeable future. The aim is to present a broad global range of high-efficiency, low-emission and electrified powertrains with the least technical variation possible. This is particularly true for the EA211 family of TSI gasoline engines that will be used worldwide.
Volkswagen redefined the state of the art in low-emission gasoline engines with the introduction of the EA211evo TSI engine generation in 2017. For the first time, the 1.5l I4 evo TSI 96 kW engine employed the efficiency-enhancing TSI evo combustion process with a high compression ratio, early inlet valve closing and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG). The launch of the three-cylinder engine EA211evo 1.0l TSI in the Golf 8 in 2020 represented the evolution of the engine family with a focus on reducing CO2 and other pollutants.
The compact engine generation EA211 is a global best-seller. Worldwide in 2020, around 5 million EA211 engines were produced at nine sites on four continents. In Group vehicles based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB), the engines are used in various powertrain topologies up to plug-in hybrids (PHEV). Therefore, they play a key role in the global competitor comparisons.
