Summary
The Volkswagen Group is in a state of profound change towards electric mobility. Thus, the Group aims to equip approx. 70% of its new vehicles with all-electric drives in 2030. This poses big challenges for the development and production of high-voltage (HV) batteries, regarded as the core component of battery electric vehicles. In order to facilitate cost-efficient and sustainable e-mobility, the "Group Technology" division is therefore concentrating on the entire value chain of the battery. The aim is the continuous standardization of products and processes in order to achieve maximum economies of scale in all areas of the Group by means of stringent harmonization.
In practice, this implies the utilization of unified battery cells with constant shape parameters and flexible battery cell chemistries to be able to meet the most diverse customer requirements regarding e.g., range or charging speed, without having to change the battery cell format. These unified battery cells are installed in standard battery systems that provide standardization for the clusters "Affordable", "Range” and "Performance”. These standard batteries are operated by standardized electronics and software.
